How Lenders Calculate Your Boat Loan Interest Rate
Credit score does the heaviest lifting. Borrowers above 720 qualify for boat loan interest rates starting at 6.49% APR in 2026; the 580–679 band lands at 10.00–13.99%. LendingTree's Q4 2025 marketplace data puts the average approved rate at 8.40% APR — a useful benchmark against any quote you receive.
Loan-to-value ratio is the factor most buyers miss. New boats cap at 90% LTV; used boats over 10 years old typically cap at 60–70%. A borrower putting 10% down on a $40,000 used hull may need to double that down payment just to meet minimum LTV requirements — regardless of credit score.
Debt-to-income ratio works as a quiet disqualifier. Most marine lenders require DTI below 43% for approval; above that threshold, expect either denial or a 1–2 point rate bump. Preferred secured boat loan pricing generally kicks in at 36% DTI or lower — a ceiling that includes the new boat payment in the calculation.
Loan size and lender type round out the picture. Balances above $50,000 often attract sharper rates; loans under $15,000 can run 2–3 points above market. Credit unions consistently beat big banks by 0.5–1.5 points on secured marine financing — getting quotes from at least three sources before committing is the single highest-leverage move available to most borrowers.
